Tina asks, “What’s your take on the whole grain-free, especially gluten, with Hashimoto’s? I’m eight months in and I’ve lost weight (great), but I’m weak, my thyroid medicine is off, I’m woozy–down right dizzy all the time–and my nasal allergies are horrific. I don’t know who to believe.”
Thanks for the question, Tina. Before I get to the answer, though, let me give a quick explanation of Hashimoto’s for those fortunate enough not to know.
Hashimoto’s means your thyroid is underperforming, and your blood tests show antibodies to allergens you’re dealing with, typically foods your body reacts to. Because of the antibodies, it’s labeled as an autoimmune disease.
So, we’re talking about an underactive thyroid, the possibility your immune system got dragged in, and, finally, the mess you’re in. That’s enough material for a book, but what you need now is some help, not a reading assignment, so let me hit some highlights.
First, you need to listen to your body. And right now, your body is screaming its lungs out. If you get very quiet, you may hear it yelling, “No! No! No!” over and over.
Our bodies are our protectors; their whole goal in life is to keep us alive, healthy, and happy. And while everybody else, including doctors, can only guess what’s going on, the body knows.
It would be nice if our bodies sent little explanatory notes about what’s wrong and what we should do about it, but no. Instead of a note, we get symptoms. Well, symptoms don’t make us smile, but they do let us know there’s a problem and help point us to a solution.
So, do your Hashimoto symptoms reveal a sensitivity to gluten? Probably not. While gluten works its woe on a small percentage of the populace, most of us can handle it just fine.
The fact your health went downhill while you avoided bread tells us the problem isn’t wheat or gluten.
But what else is in the bread? Is it made of organic flour or has it been sprayed to death with glyphosate? Does it contain “malted barley flour” which means soy, which is a problem for lots of folks. Is there inflammation-producing vegetable oil in it? Inflammation starts an encyclopedia of health problems, so avoiding vegetable oils is smart. And so on.
Second, do you really have Hashimoto’s thyroiditis? It used to be rare, but now everybody and their cousin gets told they have it. And recommended treatments don’t seem to work.

The targeted vitamins and minerals greatly improved their nutrition, to the point they were able to walk away from thyroid problems and antibodies.
The problem wasn’t their thyroid, but their nutrition. Some people do have Hashimoto’s, but a lot don’t.
Third, whom can you trust? You can always trust your body; it will never lie to you. You just have to learn its language, symptoms, to know what it’s saying.
Understanding what your symptoms are telling you takes some attention and effort, but it’s not rocket science. Besides, your body’s jumping up and down, trying to give you clues. And it’s very big on rewarding good choices–and, as you already know, your body is also big on complaining when it doesn’t get what it needs.
I’d suggest you take a close look at your diet and nutritional supplements.
